Most of us are familiar with bald eagles since you can find their likeness on everything. From money to stamps and even in the center of the Presidential Seal. But did you know that there is another species of eagle that flies the skies of North America? This is the golden eagle. 

Can you tell these two birds apart? That bald head is a dead giveaway huh? As bald eagles mature, they will grow those white feathers on top, giving them the appearance of having a bald head. 

However, its name actually comes from the old English word, piebald, meaning white-headed. While golden eagles will keep their brown feathered heads throughout their lives. Their name comes from the golden feathers on the back of their necks. 

But that isn't the only difference in their posh plumage. Bald eagles have bald feet too. Yes, you heard that right. Their feathers stop a few inches before the tops of their feet. While golden eagles are often called booted eagles since their feather go all the way down their legs. 

However, sharing the name eagle, tells us that they may also have some things in common. They can both grow up to pretty impressive sizes. Some reaching up to three feet tall. Much like an owl, both eagles can also turn their heads 270 degrees, helping them to better spot their prey. And once they catch that prey, both birds carry their cutlery with them. 

They will use those strong claws, or talons, like forks and their sharp beaks as knives, helping them to enjoy their meal in bite-size pieces. Sadly, another thing they share is the challenges caused by people. 

This is Lottie, a golden eagle who lost his wing due to a gunshot wing he received in Arizona. Lottie arrived at the Carolina Raptor Center in 1984 to receive special treatment from animal care experts, and thankfully he was able to make a full recovery. 

Nowadays, you'll often find him hopping around his habitat, gathering sticks, eating plenty of rodents, mmm, his favorite. And acting as an animal ambassador with his unusually calm demeanor around people. 

A trait that most eagles do not share. As you can see, Lottie's injuries have not slowed him down one bit. The story of his recovery is inspiring to all. As is his role in sharing the challenges that all species of eagles face around the world.

So this is a short comparison of these two types of Eagles.
